With the present state of the world with Covid, and most countries acting like older people are easily dispensable, now seemed a good a time as any to bring back the Fuck Ageism prompt for the FuckAThon to show that there exist a variety of stories out there with characters who are in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, some, even 90 years of age, all of whom are living their best lives, impacting wisdom, having sex (yes older people have sex too), falling in love, having their hearts broken, pursuing their dreams. There exists a plethora of stories that feature older people, and this recommendation of 20 books with characters who are 50 years and older is meant to be a starting point for you. Thanks for watching

  1. I read a cat who book for this. I am pretty sure the protag has turned fifty by the one I read and he spends all his time having money to burn, living in upstate somewhere, going to cultural events, and occasionslly solving mysteries with his cat when he can be bothered.

If I ever find a version of this series with any of the other kinds of diversity I will be in love.

  2. This is a fantastic idea for a rec list! I love reading books with characters from different walks of life ^^ one of the reasons cozy mysteries are one of my favorite palate-cleansing genres: little old ladies solving crime? Choice XD

The first book/series that actually came to mind is CJ Cherryh’s Chanur Saga. The main character and most of her crew are…well, I’m not sure of exact ages–and the waters are muddied by them all being a cat-like alien species whose FTL drives slow their aging relative to the people planetside–but they are very mature, experienced professionals. I love seeing older people be damn good at what they do 8) especially if there’s some good “*weary sigh* what are The Youths up to now”
